Review step-by-step instructions
Installing and signing into the app
- Search for "libby, by overdrive" in your device's app store and install the app.
- Open the app and follow the prompts.
- If this is your first time installing Libby on any of your devices, choose "I'll Search For A Library" or "Yes, Guess My Library." We recommend you choose "I'll Search For A Library" and type either "lake forest library" or "60045."
- If you choose "Guess My Library" and it does not pull up Lake Forest Library, select "No, Keep Looking" and then "No, I'll Search For A Library" and search for "lake forest library" or "60045."
- Select "Digital Library of Illinois / Lake Forest Library." Digital Library of Illinois (DLIL) includes more than 100 libraries across the state of Illinois.
- Select "Lake Forest Library," enter your library card number, and then tap "Sign In."
- Select either "Yes, I Read With Kindle" or "Skip."

- There are 2 ways to search or browse:
- Use the magnifying glass search tool. Enter a title or author into the search box.
OR - Tap the library card icon to browse the DLIL collection. Tap any of the buttons immediately below the DLIL logo (just added, popular, available now, ...), or move down the page and select a category or browse the featured book lists.
- Use the magnifying glass search tool. Enter a title or author into the search box.
- Additional tips:
- eAudiobooks have a headphones icon on the image of the item.
- You can refine search results by selecting "+ Preferences" and updating settings for Format, Availability, and other filters.
Borrowing items
- To borrow an item, tap the cover image. Tap "Borrow." If the item is not currently available, you can tap "Place Hold" and depending on your app settings, you will be notified when you can borrow it.
- Choose how long you would like to have the item (7, 14, or 21 days). Then, tap "Borrow!"
- Select "Open Book" or "Open Audiobook."
- If your borrowed item is a book, choose whether you would like to read it via "Kindle" or "Libby."
- If you choose "Libby," the book will open. If you choose "Kindle," you will be prompted to sign into your Amazon account and send your borrowed book to your Kindle device or app.
Reading or listening to items
- Items you have borrowed are available to read or listen to on your "Shelf," which you can access by tapping the books icon. Tap an item cover to open or manage that title.
