Kathy's Korner: Sequels and Series Update for September

GRAPHIC NOVELS:

BARB THE LAST BERZERKER (3): BATTLE FOR BAILIWICK by Dan Abdo.  A ragtag crew of Berzerkers and five Wise Wizards with rusty powers come together to stop an evil witch from taking over their land, as Barb attempts to harness the mystical power of the Ghost Blade and lead the charge. Gr 3-7

MAGIC TREE HOUSE (5): NIGHT OF THE NINJAS by Mary Pope Osborne.  The original Magic Tree House stories are reimagined in graphic novel format. Gr 2-4

SURVIVING THE WILD: SUNNY THE SHARK by Remy Lai.  Sunny the shark is a fearsome (albeit cute) predator. As the oceanic whitetip shark searches for her next meal, a chatty school of pilot fish trails behind, cleaning her in exchange for food crumbs. But when Sunny mistakes a plastic ring for prey and it gets caught around her fin, she soon struggles to hunt. The wildlife series includes facts about the various species highlighted and their threatened environment. Gr 3-5

FICTION

STUNTBOY, IN-BETWEEN TIME by Jason Reynolds/Raúl the Third. Excellent graphic novel/print hybrid follow-up to Stunt Boy in the Meantime.  Portico Reeves, or Stuntboy, the greatest superhero people have never heard of, tries to manage his frets and navigate his new normal with divorced parents, bullies in his building, and a newfound friend. Gr 3-7

SECRETS OF ATLANTIS by Katie O’Hearn.  Third installment in an exciting fantasy adventure set in the “lost” continent of Atlantis, populated by magical creatures such as unicorns, gargoyles and of course, dark forces. Gr 4-7

PUMPKIN FALLS MYSTERY (4): TRULY, MADLY, SHEEPLY by Heather Vogel Frederick. Quaint, cozy Pumpkin Falls is preparing for the annual Fall Festival when confronted with a mystery-the highly decorated pumpkins outside the shops in town have gone missing! And soon after, someone or something, is trying to get beloved Aunt True and Rusty to leave their new property with some seriously spooky hauntings. Our teen detective Truly has her work cut out for her, although the new boy in town is quite a distraction.  Old-fashioned fun. Gr 5-8

CHRONICLES OF NEVER AFTER (3): THE BROKEN MIRROR by Melissa De la Cruz.  The Never After crew is back for another twisted fairy tale adventure. Gr 5-9

MICHAEL VEY (8): THE PARASITE by Richard Paul Evans.  Evans returns with a follow-up to the Final Spark, supposedly the end of the Michael Vey series.  After the explosive finale, Michael and his friends' attempt to return to a normal life isn't as easy as they thought it would be.  Disturbing dreams hint that evil is still lurking.  Readers will probably want to start at the beginning of this electrifying series. Gr 5+ and all Michael Vey fans.

THE RAVEN THRONE by Stephanie Burgis. Sequel to The Raven Heir.  After becoming Queen, Cordelia falls into a deep slumber and cannot be awakened, so her siblings Rosalind and Giles embark on a kingdom-wide quest to seek assistance from ancient spirits and encounter formidable adversaries along the way. Gr 4-7

THE WILDES #2: THE VAQUITA by Roland Smith.   Ring and Asia Wilde's life is anything but ordinary. Instead of attending school, they travel the world with their parents (scientists who work to protect endangered species). On their last adventure, they swung through the Amazon rainforest to save their mom from vile kidnappers--while defending the forest's population of golden lion tamarins. Now they're in Baja, Mexico--the Sea of Cortez to be exact--searching for the endangered vaquita and finding danger and conspiracy instead. Gr 4-7
