Say hello to the Lake Forest Library version: The Stay Home Scavenger Hunt!
We hope by the end of June we're all able to be out and about more, but even if we’re still sheltering in place to some degree, this scavenger hunt will be fun from home!
The Stay Home Scavenger Hunt (SHSH—ha! perfect for librarians, right?) is full of incredible challenges designed by Teen Librarian Emmy, so you know they're going to be fun and wacky and clever.
How to Play
- Decide whether you want to play as an individual or create a team. Teams may have up to 10 people. You do not have to physically be with your team, you can collaborate virtually.
- Choose challenges to complete.
- Once you've completed a challenge, take a photo or video as evidence.
- Upload your files using the form on this page. You can submit files one at a time or all at once. The deadline is midnight on Sunday, June 28, 2020.

Recreate an iconic work of art…on a pizza. Submit a picture of the art you’ve copied with your finished masterwork. -
Zoom Fashion – 6pts
Business on top, pajamas on the bottom. How do you dress for a professional video call? Submit a picture. -
Aspiring Clown – 18pts
We have all spent this time picking up new hobbies and skills. Submit a video of yourself juggling for at least 20 seconds. -
Bunker Down – 24pts
We’ve all spent time the last few months thinking of our apocalypse plans. Build a fort and stock it with items you consider vital to your survival, then send us a picture of your set up. -
Wilson – 17pts
Tom Hanks in Cast Away has never been more relatable. Using a household appliance, build yourself a Wilson of your very own. -
Bubble Trouble – 36pts
Can you make a bubble big enough to fit a person inside? Create your own bubble mix and wands with household items and make giant bubbles! Submit a photo or video of your attempt to capture someone inside a bubble. -
Hello Yellow – 11pts
Find and gather 7 yellow items from your house. Submit your picture! -
Window Wonders – 42pts
Our frontline workers are having a very hard time of it as we push into summer. Fill your front window with a hopeful and thankful message that can be read from the street and submit a picture. -
See Me in a Crown – 34pts
Build a flower crown and submit a picture of someone wearing it. -
My Rock and Me – 22pts
Create a pet rock and submit a picture of your new friend! -
A Favorite Poem-- 27pts
Record yourself reading a poem. It can be a video of you reading a poem or a slideshow/video that you perform a voiceover for. -
Story Time – 23pts
Take a picture of you reading to your pet (real pet, rock pet, plant pet—we’re not picky). -
Costume Party – 45pts
Is there anything cuter than a pet playing dress up? No, no there is not. Dress any pet up as a book character and submit a picture! -
Paper Plants – 47pts
We don’t all have green thumbs with living things, so for those of us who can’t keep a plant alive—build a garden out of paper and submit a picture. -
I Want S’more – 16pts
S’mores contain 3 perfect ingredients: marshmallows, chocolate, and a graham cracker. Put your own twist on this perfect campfire snack by adding a 4th ingredient of your choice! Submit a picture. -
Staycation – 19pts
We all wish we could be on vacation! Build a tropical getaway in your own home and submit a picture. -
Cover Art – 17pts
Using only what’s in your house, recreate your favorite book or album cover. Submit a picture of your favorite cover and your attempt. -
Spread the Love – 9pts
Write an email to an author or artist whose work you love. Submit a screenshot before you’ve hit send! Contact information can be found on their websites. -
Bibliophile – 31pts
Record yourself recommending a favorite book and why you love it (no spoilers!) in 2 minutes or less. Submit the video!

Connect with a grandparent or elder via video call and have them teach you how to make something. Splice pictures of both finished products together and submit it to us. -
Date Night – 18pts
Build a beautiful date night for you and... your Zoom date. Send us a picture of your romantic layout. -
Closet Upgrades – 37pts
Break out the bleach and reverse tie dye an old clothing item. Google “reverse tie-dying” if you’re unfamiliar with the method. Submit a picture of your “dyed” results. -
The Porcelain Throne – 13pts
In this pandemic world, toilet paper is our most valuable commodity, worth its weight in gold—build a pedestal worthy of its majesty and submit a picture. -
Crash Landing – 9pts
Build a paper airplane that can fly at least 10 feet! Submit a video of its flight (and presumably subsequent crash landing). -
Home Remodel – 21pts
Do a home remodel for one of your green friends. Decorate a pot for a plant and submit a picture. -
Fauxmiliar Objects – 33pts
They say textiles are a dead art form. Knit, crochet, or embroider a replica of an item you use every day! Submit a picture. -
Maiden Voyage – 9pts
Build a boat—size and materials up to you--that floats with at least one passenger aboard. Submit a 30 second video of its voyage. -
Let It Snow – 15pts
Create a “snow” angel. You probably won’t be able to find snow in June, so you’ll have to get creative! Submit a picture. -
Picnic Basket – 20pts
Indoors or outside, have a quintessential picnic with a blanket, a basket, and something to eat. Send us a picture of your spread. -
This Just In! – 41pts
Film a quarantine news report! It can either be a breaking news narration of something occurring in your house or an anchor desk recap of the exciting events of the day. Submit a 60 second video of your news report. -
A House for Borrowers – 39pts
Recreate your house, or a room in your house, using LEGOs! Take a picture of your architectural masterpiece with the house (or room) it’s based on and submit it. -
A Bug’s Life – 10pts
Photograph 3 bugs you’ve found outside. Splice all your pictures together and submit one image to us. -
Pop! – 8pts
We’ve all missed visiting the movie theater, but here’s our chance to experiment with more than just butter! Create a delicious popcorn mix and submit a picture of your mix with your recipe. -
What’s Your Horoscope? – 28pts
Connect with your aura and write horoscopes for the 12 astrology signs. They can be serious, funny, or poetic—however the stars move you. Submit a picture or screenshot of predictions. -
Call of the Wild – 31pts
Create at least four different origami animals of your choice and submit a picture of your brand new origami zoo! -
Hop To It – 24pts
Break out the chalk for some public Picasso artwork! Draw an elaborate hopscotch game on your sidewalk or driveway for passersby to enjoy. Submit a video of yourself or someone playing your game! -
An Attempt Was Made – 34pts
One of the first things artists learn to practice is blind contour drawing. Pick an object to draw, and from the moment your pen or pencil touches paper you’re not allowed to lift the pencil or look at your drawing. You have to draw it blind. Once you’ve done a blind contour of your own, submit a picture of your drawing next to the object you attempted to draw. -
We Dream of Ice Cream! – 11pts
It’s going to be a hot summer, and that means we need frozen treats. Build an elaborate, picture-perfect ice cream sundae—but your masterpiece must include 1 item not found in a typical sundae. Submit a picture.

The Great Outdoors – 52pts
Pitch a tent, unroll those sleeping bags, go fishing—well, maybe not that last one. Go camping in your yard and try to catch some fireflies! Submit a picture of your campsite. -
Friend Squad – 36pts
Make friendship bracelets or badges or matching t-shirts. Whatever you come up with, you should have enough for everyone in your Friend Squad. Submit a picture. -
Covers Out – 17pts
How many books can you hold at once with their covers facing out? Books all facing forward, only one person holding, no Photoshop or editing, and no solid supports (shelves, metal frame, etc.). Make sure you get a picture! This challenge comes from fantasy author Mark Lawrence, and you can get inspiration from the pictures submitted to his challenge in 2013. -
High Tea – 29pts Host a stuffed animal tea party and submit a picture of yourself drinking tea with your fluffy friends.

Don’t Blink – 17pts
You can never have too many friends. Attach googly eyes to some plants and make instant new buddies! Submit a picture. -
Random Acts – 59pts
Nominate a nonprofit who has stepped up to help during the COVID-19 pandemic for Random Acts Support Program. Submit a screenshot of your nomination. -
Portrait Art – 64pts
Create a LEGO portrait of a favorite celebrity—never seen one before? Start with pixelating an image or googling LEGO portrait to get ideas. Don’t get overwhelmed, we don’t expect you to turn into a professional LEGO portrait artist—just make an attempt and have fun! Submit a photo of your creation. -
Front Page – 45pts
Create a cover for a fake magazine—it can be a real magazine you’re spoofing, a fictional magazine from one of your fandoms, or something in between! Your cover should feature headlines to fake articles to entice your readers, and of course a dynamic cover image. -
Legacies of War – 55pts
Create art inspired by the stories of war refugees for the Legacies of War project by going to ventstudio.co and learning about the project. Submit a picture of your work and the image that inspired it. There are no rules, no guidelines. Simply respect the story. -
Tea-Rex! – 25pts Create an image of a T-Rex or other dinosaur entirely out of tea. Submit a picture. (Prompt by Amalie T.W.)

Sometimes less is more. Create a Blackout Poem from a page of a book (can be a photocopy) and submit a picture of your work. Google “blackout poetry” if you’ve never seen one before. -
Zzzzzzzzzzz – 15pts
Create your perfect napping place and send us a picture of your perfect nap. -
Fridge Factor – 13pts
Submit a picture of your perfectly organized refrigerator—is it color coordinated? Is it perfectly labeled? Show us how perfect your fridge can be. -
Couch Potato – 18pts
Carve a potato into a replica of your couch—or your dream couch. Submit a picture. -
Snail Mail – 47pts
Write a Letter of Gratitude to someone who has changed your life for the better. Take a picture of your letter (from a distance, we don’t need to see what you wrote!) before you put it in an envelope and drop it in the mail. -
Animal Kingdom – 22pts
It’s too bad a virtuoso like yourself is out of paint. Fortunately, you still have toothpaste. Paint a picture of an endangered animal out of toothpaste on a mirror and send us a photo. -
Best Insect Award – 33pts
Nature is amazing, but there are some aspects we just don’t appreciate enough. Make an underappreciated insect out of entirely edible materials and submit a picture to us! -
Footprints – 29pts
Incorporate the footprints of everyone in your household (pets included!) into a picture and submit it to us. -
Action Oriented – 58pts
Propose to change one of the racist landmark names in the United States using the US Board on Geographic Names web petition: https://www.usgs.gov/core-science-systems/ngp/board-on-geographic-names/domestic-names. Use the Guest login information found at the bottom of the login page and submit a screenshot of your petition.
