Come be a part of the discussion with Dr. Lucas Richert and Carol Summerfield as they explore how science, culture, politics, and big personalities act as arbiters in the legitimacy and illegitimacy of drugs, alcohol, tobacco, medications, and addiction.

Bio of Dr. Lucas Richert

Lucas Richert is the George Urdang Chair in the History of Pharmacy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Pharmacy. He also serves as the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy's Historical Director where he oversees the Institute's historical programming, serves as Editor-in-Chief of Pharmacy in History, and ensures the historical integrity of all AIHP programs and publications.

His first book, "Conservatism, Consumer Choice, and the FDA during the Reagan Era: A Prescription for Scandal," examined the politicization of pharmaceutical regulation in the 1980s and won the Arthur Miller Centre First Book Award from the British Association for American Studies. His recent book, "Strange Trips: Science, Culture, and the Regulation of Drugs," investigates the myths, meanings, and boundaries of recreational drugs, palliative care drugs, and pharmaceuticals.

Dr. Richert is also a co-editor of the journal, Social History of Alcohol and Drugs, published by the University of Chicago Press.
